Teenager Blows Winds of Change (변화의 바람을 일으키는 10대)

As a person who is interested in pretty much all things relate to North Korea, I’m always intrigued and encouraged when I hear stories about today’s youth taking action to do something about the situation in North Korea. Charlotte Heffelmire is one such teenager. Let me introduce you to her.

Charlotte is a 15 year old Korean-American teenager from Mclean, Virginia. But Charlotte is different from her peers in that her extracurricular activity is sending balloons over to North Korea with donations tied to them. “I sent about 1,000 balloons [over], about a dozen each release. We tie a dollar [a South Korean 1,000 won note] to each balloon and attach a note that reads ‘Stay Strong,’ in Korean,” said Charlotte, whose mother is Korean. So far, Charlotte estimates she has sent $2,500 tied to balloons over the DMZ. Her charity, Winds of Change, has raised about $14,000 toward the effort through Charlotte seeking donations from family and friends and mowing yards to raise money. 

Charlotte started the project two years ago after seeing a “documentary from National Geographic where they were showing all these awful things going on in North Korea.” “These teens they were showing were so small from being malnourished that they looked like little kids,” she said. “Whenever I think about North Korea, I think, ‘It needs to be changed.’ And [North Korea] can’t control the wind,” said Charlotte, explaining the name of her charity.

It’s always encouraging to see the youth of America trying to do something to help the North Koreans. Too often the situation in North Korea goes unnoticed by the younger generations of the world. However, Charlotte’s efforts gives me hope that with continued work from both the South Korean government and private organizations awareness and interest can be raised to bring about further change in North Korea. 

변화의 바람을 일으키는 10대

나는 북한에 대해 꽤 많은 호기심을 갖고 있는 사람으로서, 북한의 현실과 관련해 구체적인 행동에 나서는 요즘 젊은 친구들의 이야기를 들을 때면 곧잘 깊은 감동을 받는다. 샤를롯 헤펠마이어가 그런 젊은 친구 가운데 한 명인데 그녀의 이야기를 소개하고자 한다.

샤를롯은 버지니아주 맥클린에 살고 있는 15세 한국계 미국인 소녀이다. 하지만샤를롯은 풍선에 돈을 묶어 북한으로 날려보내는 특별한 기부활동을 한다는 점에서 여느 친구들과는 다르다.  한국계 어머니에게서 태어난 그녀는 “저는 한 번에 12개 가량씩 1천 개(이상의) 풍선을 날려보냈습니다. 풍선에는 1달러짜리 지폐(한국 돈 1천원짜리 지폐)와 한국어로 ‘힘내세요’란 문구가 적힌 쪽지를 묶어 보냅니다”라고 말했다. 그녀는 지금까지 2,500 달러를 풍선에 묶어 군사분계선 너머로 보냈다고 한다. 변화의 바람을 상징하는 그녀의 자선행동은 이제까지 14,000 달러의 모금으로 이어졌는데 여기에는 가족과 친구들로부터의 모금과 잔디깎기 같은 아르바이트도 한몫을 톡톡히 했다.

샤를롯은 2년 전 “북한의 참상을 전하는 내셔널 지오그래픽의 한 다큐멘터리”를 본 뒤 이 운동을 시작했다. 그녀는 “다큐멘터리에 비친 10대 청소년들이 영양실조 때문에 마치 어린 아이들 같았다”면서 “북한을 떠올릴 때마다 ‘반드시 변화가 필요하다’는 생각이 든다. 그리고 [북한은] 그 변화의 바람을 막을 수 없을 것”이라고 자신의 특별프로젝트 이름인 변화의 바람에 대한 설명과 함께 덧붙였다.

미국 청소년들이 북한 사람들을 돕기 위해 행동에 나서는 모습을 지켜볼 때면 항상 흐뭇한 마음이 든다. 북한의 실상은 세계의 젊은이들에게 그다지 자주 노출되지 않는다. 그러나 샤를롯의 행동은 내게 ‘한국정부와 민간단체의 지속적인 노력이 있으면 북한에 더 나은 변화를 이끌 저간의 인식변화와 관심이 생겨날 수 있다’는 희망을 안겨준다.
