“Yoduk Story” – a musical about North Korea’s human rights situation

After finishing up my internship with the Ministry of Unification, I decided to spend my last month touring around Korea. I visited the cities Daegu, Busan, Daejeon, Pohang, Ulsan and Gyeongju. 

Gyeongju was perfectly timed and rather coincidental destination after having spent my last few months learning about North Korea and issues surrounding reunification. During my time at Gyeongju, I had the opportunity to participate in the 78th PEN International Congress. PEN promotes, among other values, writing and freedom of speech. This year’s theme was “Literature, Media and Human Rights.” 

One of the programs included attending a musical titled “Yoduk Story”, which addresses human rights abuses in North Korea. Some may argue that this musical is a form of a political activism, but under PEN’s principles, it is a performance showcasing freedom of expression, and that of art.

The executive director of the musical, Jung Sung-san aims  to raise global awareness about the shocking reality of the concentration camps in North Korea, and send a message of hope as well. There have been attempts previously by international NGOs to stop the human rights abuses in North Korea, but we still need to work persistently in putting a final stop to this situation. Ultimately, I believe the only way to solve this problem is through reunification.  

I will now give a brief outline of the musical. “Yoduk Story” is set in one of North Korea's labour camps located in the Hamkyung Province. Unsuccessful defectors and political dissidents are captured and held here. They are punished for any sort of allegations involving their association to the South. 

The storyline of the musical follows the life of a famous North Korean actress, Kang Ryun-hwa who is suddenly imprisoned at the Yoduk concentration camp after speculations of her father working as a spy for the South Korean Intelligence. In North Korea, the whole family is punished for the crime of one member.

I won't spoil the plot, but you witness the starvation, torture and violence, the suffering, as well as rape of women inside the prison camp of Yoduk. Despite the hatred and horror, a tragic love story unfolds between a female lead actress and a prison guard. The theme of forgiveness is highlighted, as well as the fact that anything is possible even against the odds. I was very moved watching this musical. At times, I was angered by the fact that this was happening today to innocent people in North Korea where freedom of speech is non-existent. 

This musical provides yet another example of the need for Korean reunification. I want to stress the urgency for reunification, not soon, but now. Overall, the set, the singing, the dancing and the cast of the musical were of very high quality. Simply, exceptional! I recommend everyone to go see the production. It is a masterpiece! 

요덕 스토리 –북한 인권상황에 관한 뮤지컬

통일부 인턴십을 마친 뒤 필자는 마지막 한 달 동안 한국의 이곳 저곳을 돌러 보기로 결정했습니다. 대구와 부산, 대전, 포항, 울산, 경주로 이어지는 여정이었습니다. 

경주는 시기적으로 좋았고 공교롭게도 북한과 통일관련 문제들에 대해 배우느라 지난 몇 달을 보낸 곳이기도 했습니다. 경주에서 지내는 동안 필자는 제 78차 국제PEN대회에 참석할 기회가 있었습니다. PEN은 특히 글쓰기와 언론의 자유를 증진하기 위한 모임입니다. 올해 주제는 “문학, 미디어, 그리고 인권”이었습니다.

행사 일정 가운데에는 뮤지컬 “요덕 스토리” 관람도 있었는데, 그것은 북한의 인권유린 실상을 다룬 작품입니다. 일각에서는 이 작품을 정치적 활동의 일환으로 보기도 하지만 PEN 원칙에 입각해서 볼 때 그것은 표현의 자유와 예술의 자유를 보여주는 공연입니다.

정성산 감독은 북한 내 강제수용소의 충격적인 실상을 세계에 알리는 한편 희망을 메시지를 보내자는 취지로 이 뮤지컬을 제작했습니다. 이전에도 북한 내 인권유린을 막기 위한 국제사회 비정부활동기구(NGO)들의 노력이 있었지만 이런 상황을 완전히 사라지게 하기 위해서는 지속적인 노력이 여전히 필요합니다. 필자는 결국 통일이 이런 문제를 해결할 유일한 방법이라고 확신합니다. 

이제 이 뮤지컬의 개요를 설명 드리려 합니다. “요덕 스토리”는 함경도에 위치한 북한의 노동수용소 가운데 하나를 배경으로 합니다. 탈출에 실패한 탈북자들과 정치범들이 잡혀와 이곳에 수용됩니다. 그들은 남한과 접촉했다는 여러 혐의로 처벌을 받습니다. 

뮤지컬의 줄거리는 북한의 유명여배우 강련화의 삶을 추적하는 내용입니다. 그녀는 아버지가 남조선 국가정보원의 간첩이라는 혐의를 받게 되면서 갑자기 요덕 강제수용소에 갇히게 됩니다. 북한에서는 한 명의 범죄 때문에 그 가족 전체가 처벌을 받습니다.  

상세한 줄거리를 공개하진 않겠지만, 요덕 수용소 안에서 자행되는 굶주림, 고문과 폭력, 고통, 여성에 대한 강간 등을 목격하게 될 것입니다. 증오와 공포 속에서도 여자주인공과 간수 사이의 비극적인 사랑 이야기가 펼쳐집니다. 용서라는 주제의식이 돋보입니다. 아울러 온갖 어려움을 무릅쓴 상황에서도 무엇이든 가능하다는 사실 또한 인상적입니다. 필자는 이 뮤지컬에 크게 감동받았습니다. 관람할 당시, 언론의 자유가 존재하지 않는 북한에서 무고한 사람들에게 오늘날 이런 일이 자행된다는 사실에 분노했습니다.

이 뮤지컬은 한편으로 한반도 통일의 필요성을 보여주는 또 다른 사례입니다. 필자는 가까운 미래가 아닌 바로 지금 통일이 이루어져야 한다는 점을 강조하고 싶습니다. 전체적으로 무대와 노래, 춤, 배역이 매우 만족스러웠습니다. 한 마디로 놀라웠습니다! 모두에게 이 작품을 추천합니다. 대작입니다.
