On My Way to See You (이제 만나러 갑니다)

There is a new show on Korea’s Channel A called “On My Way to See You”. The show invites female North Korean refugees to talk about the experiences they had as teenagers and young adults in the North. Some of the ladies were performers at North Korea’s national performing arts group in Pyongyang, while others had less privileged lives and witnessed their family members’ deaths to diseases that modern technology could have easily prevent. Kim Jieun, from Youngwon, Pyeongannamdo, had a particularly heartbreaking story about her grandmother.

Jieun’s grandmother was a singer while Kim Il Sung was in control. A Jeollanamdo native, Jieun’s grandmother always missed her hometown in the South and sang “Jjilaekkot,” (wild rose) although it was a song banned by the North Korean government because the song is exactly about a person reminiscing about all the good times he had in his hometown in the south. As a child, young Jieun secretly learned the song from her grandmother. Several years later, Jieun’s grandmother died of starvation, and Jieun had to leave North Korea to feed herself.

After singing the song her grandmother had taught her to the audience, Jieun told that it broke her heart that she did not have the chance to pay her respect to her beloved grandmother before leaving North Korea. She also said “it is so sad that I have visited Jeollanamdo while my grandmother passed away wishing she could visit her hometown just one last time.” 

This story is meaningful because most young people in South Korea do not realize that they have family members in the North or that some elderly South Koreans miss their hometown in North Korea. I personally thought of all the pain my grandmother had to experience after she found out that her older brother was in the North and that she would not be able to see him again in this life. While reuniting family members separated by the Korean war was one of the main reasons why Korean people wanted unification in the 1980s, more and more people are viewing unification simply as an economic threat to South Koreans. Within the next few decades, most of South and North Koreans who have familial connections on the other side will pass away, and unification will just move even farther out from people’s minds. I hope “On My Way to See You” can bring out more wake-up calls, like Jieun’s story, to bring people’s attention and hearts to unification.

이제 만나러 갑니다

얼마 전에 방영하기 시작한 ‘이제 만나러 갑니다’라는 TV 프로그램이 있다. 이 프로그램은 여성 탈북자들이 출연하여 그들의 어릴 적 북한에서의 경험에 대해 이야기를 나누는 프로그램이다. 게스트로 나온 몇 명의 탈북자들 중에는 평양 예술단에서 활동을 한 여성들도 있었고 그보다 넉넉지 못한 생활을 했던 여성들도 있었다. 어떤 이들은 가족이 현대의학으로 쉽게 예방할 수 있는 병이 들어 죽는 것을 옆에서 지켜볼 수 밖에 없었던 여성들도 많았다. 평안남도 영원이 고향인 김지은씨는 할머니에 대해 특히 가슴 아픈 이야기를 전해주었다.

김지은씨의 할머니는 김정일이 북한을 지배할 당시 가수셨다. 전라남도가 고향이셨던 할머니는 한국의 고향을 많이 그리워하며 ‘찔레꽃’이라는 노래를 자주 부르셨다.  ‘찔레꽃’은 한국에서의 즐거웠던 시절을 그리워하는 내용의 노래이기 때문에 북한에서 금지된 노래임에도 불구하고 할머니는 그 노래를 자주 불렀던 것이다. 김지은씨는 할머니가 부르는 것을 듣고 어려서부터 그 노래를 배웠다. 그리고 몇 년 뒤 할머니가 돌아가셨고 김지은씨는 먹을 것을 찾아 북한을 떠나야만 했다. 

할머니에게 배운 그 노래를 방청객에게 불러준 뒤 김지은씨는 북한을 떠나기 전 할머니 묘에 찾아가 제대로 인사를 드리지 못했던 것이 지금도 마음이 아프다고 말했다. 할머니가 돌아가신 후 혼자 전라남도를 찾아간 것이 매우 슬프고 할머니가 마지막으로 한번만 고향을 볼 수 있었으면 하는 안타까운 마음도 전했다. 

지금의 많은 한국인 청년들은 북한에 자신들의 가족이 살고 있을 거라는 것을 모른다. 그리고 북한이 고향인 많은 어르신 분들이 있어 김지은씨의 이야기는 더욱 뜻 깊은 것 같다. 이 프로그램을 보며 나는 자신의 오빠가 북한에 있으며 이생에서는 절대로 다시 볼 수 없다는 것을 알았을 때 우리 할머니가 느꼈을 고통이 생각 났다. 1980년대 까지만 해도 이산가족의 상봉을 위해 통일이 이뤄져야 한다고 믿는 사람들이 많았지만 지금은 많은 사람들에게 통일은 한국 경제를 위협하는 것으로만 느껴질지도 모른다. 앞으로 몇 십 년이 지나면 이산가족의 수는 확연히 줄어들 것이고 통일은 그만큼 우선순위에서 멀어질 수도 있다. 하지만 나의 희망은 ‘이제 만나러 갑니다’와 같은 프로그램, 그리고 김지은씨와 같은 사람들의 이야기를 통해 한국 사회가 통일에 귀를 기울였으면 좋겠다.
