I am working as a university reporter in ministry of unification in Korea and I'd like to get your own opinion about the North and South Korea. Your thoughts will be collected with other foreigners' opinion and be completed in one article. The questions are below:

1. How much do you know about the past situation between South and North Korea?

2. What was the most recent news articles or the posts on SNS that you saw?

3. How do you think of North Korea in general?

4. How do you think of Reunification of Korea?

(I know that North Korea is military dictatorship (not sure if the definition is correct), before North and South Korea were the same country, but then they were separated. South Korea is a democracy, North Korea is said to be democracy too, but it’s a lie.)

(I often see that Kim Jung Eun frightens everybody to start the atomic bomb. And I heard that he executed his uncle.)

(I think it’s awful that such political regime exists and people are treated so badly there.)

(It would be great. If it will be a real democracy of course.)

(Both nations have been separated during the Cold War.
China and Russia had aligned values with North Korea and allied towards building the nation)

2.
(United States’ involvement with North Korea)

3.

(I am very concerned in regards to the human rights of citizens in North Korea. Forced labour or public executions, for example, are inhumane ways of governing. Harsh restrictions of information and freedom of movement for citizens should not be accepted practices. We are all human beings and we should be treated fairly and equally. We should be given the same opportunities and resources. Additionally, the health and safety of the nation is concerning. I have read about violence against women, abductions, and disappearances. It is sad and unfortunate that individuals there have shifted their focus on to a “survival mode” instead of aligning those efforts into themselves and building their own identities (eg. education or personal goals, aspirations, and values))

4.
(This could become an option if their president stopped being crazy.)

대부분 제가 아는 것은 ‘Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea’라는 책에 대한 것입니다. (I don’t know much about the past situation between South and North Korea. Most of the things that I know about North Korea is from a book called ‘Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea’. It’s a book written by Barbara Demick, an American journalist who have interviewed more than 100 defectors.)

(The most recent news that I saw is ‘The North Korean Army Celebration is coming soon. North Korea marks the 85th anniversary of the foundation of its Korean People’s Army on 25th, April.’)

(All the things that I know about the North Korea are from books or newspapers. I don’t know if the writers’ opinions are influenced by their position. Therefore, the North Korea is still a mystery to me.)

(From the book ‘Nothing to Envy’, I know that the South Korea government offers money to the defectors and helps them to integrate into the South Korea. Some of the defectors integrated into the South Korea but some of them couldn’t get used to the life in the South Korea. I think I shouldn’t judge if the reunification is good or not. It’s up to the people who is involved in the reunification.)
