As One (하나로 : 영화 코리아)

As One is a relatively recent movie based on true story of the first ever united North and South Korean table tennis team competing at the 1991 World Table Tennis Championships held in Japan. As there are not many popular movies with North Korea related topics – other than those involving North Korean spies – I was intrigued by high ratings and some positive reviews on this movie. For example, some reviews mentioned that the movie softened their negative views toward North Korea and doubts about the possibility of unification, which is remarkable considering the increased hostility since the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island and the Cheonan incident.

Initially, I was moved to tears at the end of the movie. It could have been due to the expressive acting of famous actresses Ha Ji-won and Bae Du-na, who played prominent South Korean table tennis player Hyun Jung-wha and her North Korean rival Rhee Bun-hee, respectively. Maybe it was the fact that at the end, they had to pretend as if nothing had happened and go each other’s separate ways. Although certain plots and characters might have been added for a more dramatic effect and hence, providing a greater appeal to viewers, the movie sends a reminder to South Korean audience of the painful past and the reality – the reality where the two Koreas remain separated.

This reality was once again reminded in a similar setting yet in a very different way during the London Olympics 2012, which occurred just two months after the first release of the movie. South Koreans, including myself, stayed up night after night cheering on the athletes and their accomplishments. Although there are numerous highlights from this year’s summer Olympics, I personally found men’s table tennis match between South Korea and North Korea most memorable, because it presented a stark contrast between the movie and the reality. Again, I emphasize the fact that there is no way of knowing how much of the movie was truly based on facts. So I will never know if the two rivals were as close as depicted in the movie. However, South and North Korean teams competing as separate teams was enough to recap the melancholy sentiment at the realization of the current state of the two very separated Koreas.

In an interview conducted by Eurosport, South Korea’s Ryu Seung-min said although the two teams greet and talk to each other, on court they are “at war, tennis table war.”  As if the devastating Korean War wasn’t enough, wars of all sizes still exist between North and South, even in tennis table. Although both South Korea and North Korea did well during the Olympics, I cannot help but to think of the sweet victory by the unified Korean team two decades ago. Of course, winning is not the most important aspect, but the unlimited possibility of what a unified Korean team, and further, a unified Korea could achieve, poses much hope and excitement.

Since the Olympics, the tension between South and North has continued to rise, and the likelihood of restarting inter-Korean dialogues remains uncertain, let alone another joint national team. But someday in the near future, I hope to see South and North Korean athletes compete as one again.

하나로(코리아)는 1991년 일본세계탁구선수권대회에 출전한 사상 첫 남북단일팀의 실제 이야기를 바탕으로 제작된 비교적 최근에 개봉한 영화입니다. 간첩관련 소재를 제외한다면 북한관련 이야기를 소재로 인기를 끈 영화가 많지 않았기 때문에 필자는 이 영화에 높은 점수와 함께 호평을 보냈습니다.  실제로, 일각에서는 이 영화가 연평도 포격과 천안함 사태 이후 적대감이 고조되는 상황에서 잘 드러나듯, 북한에 대한 부정적인 시각과 통일 가능성에 대한 회의적인 인식을 누그러뜨리는 데 도움이 됐다고 평가했습니다.

처음에 필자는 영화가 끝날 무렵 눈물을 흘릴 정도로 감동을 받았습니다. 남한의 현정화 선수와 북한의 라이벌 리분희 선수로 변신한 유명 여배우 하지원과 배두나의 감동적인 연기 때문이었을 수도 있습니다. 어쩌면 경기가 끝나고 마치 아무일 없다는 듯이 각자 다른 길로 가야 한다는 사실 때문이었는지도 모르겠습니다. 관객들에게 보여줄 좀더 드라마틱한 요소가 스토리 구성과 배역에 가미되었다 하더라도, 이 영화는 여전히 남한 관객들에게 고통스런 과거와 분단이라는 현실을 상기시켜 줄 것입니다.  

이런 현실은 영화가 개봉한 지 두 달 밖에 지나지 않은 시점에 개최된 2012런던올림픽 기간 동안 비슷한 무대에서 매우 다른 방식으로 다시 한 번 전개되었습니다. 필자를 비롯한 남한 사람들은 선수들의 선전을 지켜보며 환호하느라 밤을 새야 했습니다. 수많은 올림픽 경기 하이라이트 방송 가운데 필자는 개인적으로 남북한 남자탁구경기에 주목했습니다. 영화와 현실의 극명한 대조를 보여주었기 때문입니다. 남북한 선수가 실제로도 영화에서 그려진 것만큼 가까웠는지 모르겠습니다. 하지만 별도 팀으로 출전해 경쟁을 벌인 남북한 선수들의 모습은 분단이라는 현 상황이 현실이라는 우울한 감정을 환기시키기에 충분했습니다.

남한의 유승민 선수는 유로스포츠와의 인터뷰에서 양팀 선수들이 서로 인사하고 이야기를 나누지만 경기장에서는 “탁구 전쟁을 벌인다¹”고 말했습니다. 그 엄청났던 한국전쟁만으로 충분치 않았던지 남북한 사이에는 여전히 모든 유형의 전쟁이 존재합니다. 심지에 탁구에서도 말입니다. 남북한 모두 이번 올림픽에서 선전했지만, 20년 전 단일팀의 짜릿한 승리의 감격을 지울 수 없습니다. 물론, 우승만이 전부는 아닙니다. 하지만 단일팀, 나아가 통일된 한반도가 일궈낼 수 있는 무한한 가능성은 커다란 희망과 흥분을 갖게 합니다.

올림픽 이후, 남북간의 긴장은 계속 고조되고 있습니다. 단일팀은 고사하고 남북간의 대화재개 가능성도 여전히 불투명합니다. 하지만 가까운 시일 내에 남북한 선수들이 다시 한 번 같은 팀으로 경기에 나서면 좋겠습니다.
