North Korea has more cultural DNA in common with imperial Japan than with communist neighbors China and Russia. So says Brian Myers, author of The Cleanest Race: How North Koreans See Themselves and Why It Matters, and he makes a compelling case. He takes pains to trace a cultural succession that began in 1905, when Japan invaded Korea and began a ruthless colonization and indoctrination of its people. He argues that North Koreans inherited the imperial concept of racial purity (and that Japan meant them to), and that it's the foundation of North Korean self-conception and the basis of their government's claim to legitimacy.
Essentially, this racial purity means that North Koreans are like children: pure but vulnerable. Hence the need for a protector, a parental figure, to guide and lead them against a cruel world bent on domination.
You'll have to read the book to get more than that from me; suffice to say, it's an interesting thesis.
I found his arguments cogently written, persuasively explained, and clear. The book was a pleasure to read, actually; he writes very well. Sometimes his evidence felt a little thin; for instance, he claims that Mt. Baektu didn't derive any special significance until Japanese veneration of Mt. Fuji came into the picture after 1905, and my research suggested that it's been of special importance since 1767, if not earlier. Myers also gets a little overenthusiastic about delving into the hyperbole of North Korea’s propaganda assertions; but it's entertaining, not least for Myers' sly sense of humor and irony. At 200 pages, it's a relatively quick read, but an informative and important one, both for general understanding of North Korean ideology and for a more informed approach toward dealing with the country politically.
He claims that traditional American attempts at engagement or at buying nuclear concessions with aid or trade are doomed to fail, because the very legitimacy of the North Korean government depends on antagonism with America. I thought this was one of his strongest points; though it doesn't tell us what we should do, at least it explains the failure of our traditional (and current) policies.

문화적 DNA 측면에서 북한은 공산주의 우방인 중국이나 러시아보다는 제국주의 일본과 더 닮아 있습니다. 『가장 깨끗한 민족: 북한 사람들이 자신을 보는 방식과 그것이 문제가 되는 이유』의 저자 브라이언 마이어스의 진단입니다. 그러면서 그는 강력한 증거를 제시합니다. 그는 1905년부터 시작된 문화적 연속성을 부단히 추적합니다. 당시는 일본이 한반도를 침략해 무자비한 식민지 건설과 조선 사람들에 대한 민족성 말살을 시작한 시점이었습니다. 그는 북한 사람들이 인종적 순수성(단일민족)이란 제국주의적 개념을 물려 받았으며 (당시 일본이 의도했던 대로), 그것이 북한 사람들의 자아 개념의 기초이자 북한 당국의 합법성 주장의 토대라고 진단합니다.

필자는 그의 주장이 설득력 있고 납득할만하며, 명확하게 드러나 있다고 생각합니다. 이 책은 사실 읽는 재미도 쏠쏠합니다; 그가 글을 잘 쓰기 때문입니다. 때론 그가 제시한 증거가 다소 빈약해 보이기도 합니다. 가령, 일본인들의 후지 산 숭배가 가시화된 1905년 이후에야 백두산에 특별한 의미를 담기 시작했다는 것입니다. 필자의 조사에 따르면, 백두산은 그보다 훨씬 이전인 1700년대부터 신성한 곳으로 인식되어 왔습니다. 마이어스 교수가 또한 북한 선전주장의 과장여부를 조사하면서는 열정이 다소 지나지치 않았나 하는 생각이 듭니다. 적어도 마이어스 교수의 어설픈 유머감각과 비꼬는 감각으론 말입니다. 그냥 웃어넘기면 되는 문제일텐데요. 200여쪽인 이 책은 비교적 빠르게 읽을 수 있지만 북한 이데올로기에 대한 일반적 이해와 좀더 많은 정보를 통해 북한을 정치적으로 접근한다는 측면에서 볼 때 유용하고 중요한 내용을 담고 있습니다.
그는 대북 포용이나 원조 또는 교역을 통해 핵 양보를 이끌어낸다는 전통적인 미국의 접근방식이 결국 실패할 것이라 주장합니다. 북한 정부의 정당성 그 자체가 미국에 대한 적대감(반미)에서 비롯된다는 이유에서입니다. 필자는 이것이 그의 주장의 핵심이라 생각합니다. 그것이 우리에게 무엇을 해야 할 것인지에 대해서 말하고 있진 않지만, 적어도 우리의 기존 (그리고 현재의) 정책이 실패할 것이라고 지적하고 있기 때문입니다.
